The music of the drums may be moving to the end. It is vital, powerful and speaks to our baser instincts. Perhaps because the purpose drum music is essentially to provide a lid that can be heard by all. Listeners unit pace, put them all in the same time and space, and creates a link between them. Taking into account its capabilities, it is not surprising that the drum is one of the most common in the world, found in cultures from every continent on the planet. Even less surprising is the fact that many cultures at one time or another, have applied the battery power of religion and ceremonies.
It would impossible to give examples of all different religious drums applications that have been raised. There are, after all, countless religions in the world today, and who knows how many people have died over the eons. Therefore, only applications in the religions of which I am most familiar: Shintoism, Judaism and Christianity.
The Shinto religion is very ancient, having existed as long as there were people on the island of Japan. It predates the introduction of Buddhism and has survived until today. It is a polytheistic and animistic faith and is usually translated as "The Way of the Gods." To a visitor in Japan, more demonstrations evident in the many Shinto shrines, where the public can attend the services. There are many different celebrations that take place in these shrines throughout the year, and traditional Japanese drums called taiko were often used during celebrations. Taiko drums are able to create huge sounds and notes taking these drums have always been associated with the gods. In fact, in ancient Japan, there was a time that taiko could be played only on religious occasions, and only by men who had obtained Special permission for priests.
Many people are surprised to learn that Judaism has a tradition of using the battery. Even if you can not find a drum to a traditional service in a synagogue, that religion has a strong tradition of using music to celebrate God, and the drums are often part of this music. Batteries are specifically mentioned in the Torah in several places: the sister Miriam (Moses), played drums in celebration of Jews escape by the Egyptians and the division of the Red Sea (Exodus 15:20) and in the Psalms, King David speaks of praising God with tambourines, or small hand held drums (150:4).
Traditionally Christianity has excluded from their drums in religious ceremonies. However, during the last decade or two, there was a movement increasingly expanding plus the boundaries of Christian music include more contemporary music, which sometimes led to the inclusion of non-traditional instruments like drums. Moreover, Christianity is unique in that it has succeeded in generating several genres of modern music, including Christian Rock, Contemporary Christian or Christian Rap. The drums are certainly used to produce this kind of music, which is in its essence, just another method of worship.
