
Women like to join the Sangha, King Asoka sent Sanghamitta the nun, her daughter, to found the religious order of Ceylon. An offshoot of the sacred Bodhi tree in Gaya was also sent to her and planted at Anuradhapura, where it still stands as the oldest historical tree in the world. Soon the whole island of Ceylon, became a stronghold of Buddhism, which, centuries later, the learned monks have gone to neighboring countries like Thailand, Burma, Laos and Cambodia to revive or strengthen Buddhism there.
A council has been said to be held in Ceylon, shortly after the arrival of Mahinda Viejo. According to tradition, the Fourth Council the participation of 60,000 arhats chaired by Venerable Arit ฺ t ฺ has, the first student of the Elder Mahinda. This advice, however, is not accepted everywhere.
The next Council of Ceylon, was held by 500 monks in WE. 4321 (112 BC), during the reign of King Wat Agama ฺฺฺ t i Abhaya. Four other councils are said to be held in Ceylon during the later centuries, but are not internationally recognized, except the seventh, which was held under the reign of King Parakkamabahu, who had a Buddha was brought from India and registered the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy.
